General Description
The Bala Shark, or Silver Shark, is a member of the Cyprinidae family characterized by its metallic silver body and striking yellow and black dorsal and caudal fins. This species is known for its peaceful nature, making it an ideal addition to semi-aggressive community aquariums. With a moderate care level, Bala Sharks are active during the day and can grow up to 5.1cm in size.
Aquarium Setup
Bala Sharks thrive in aquariums with a minimum size of 500 litres and benefit from environments that include driftwood, rocks, and patches of dense vegetation for exploration and shelter. They prefer to be kept in groups of three or more, as they exhibit schooling behavior in captivity. Water conditions that suit these sharks range from a pH of 6.5-7.5, a temperature between 22.2-26.1°C, and a moderate hardness level of 10-15 KH (see table).
Behaviour
Displaying semi-aggressive behavior, Bala Sharks are generally peaceful but may exhibit territoriality, especially during feeding. They are active swimmers and social creatures that enjoy the company of their species in a group setting.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Bala Sharks have a non-specific diet and readily accept various foods. Their diet can include flake food, freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, and vegetable-based offerings. Keeping a balanced diet is crucial to their overall health and well-being.

In the wild, Bala Sharks are commonly found in the freshwater rivers of Southeast Asia, particularly in countries like Thailand and Malaysia. They prefer habitats with moderate to fast-moving water currents and are known to inhabit densely vegetated areas.
