Behaviour

The Pearl 'Danio' is a peaceful species, suitable for a community tank with various fish species. It thrives in groups and should ideally be kept in groups of 8-10 individuals to reduce stress and promote natural behaviors. In such setups, males exhibit vibrant colors as they compete for female attention. It is a schooling species by nature, enjoying the company of its own kind. Thorough research is crucial when selecting tankmates, considering its small size and peaceful demeanor.

Aquarium Setup

To showcase the Pearl 'Danio' effectively, a heavily planted aquarium with a dark substrate is recommended. Mimicking a flowing river or stream environment with varied-sized rocks, gravel, and some large boulders is ideal. Providing moderate water flow with powerheads or filter outlets is beneficial, but extreme currents should be avoided. The tank should have a secure cover as these fish are known to jump.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, the Pearl 'Danio' primarily feeds on insects, their larvae, algae, and organic detritus. In captivity, they accept a wide range of foods including high-quality dried foods supplemented with live or frozen options like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia. Providing a varied diet ensures their nutritional needs are met and promotes overall health.

Reproduction

As egg-scattering spawners, Pearl 'Danios' show no parental care. In a well-conditioned aquarium, they spawn frequently, with fry potentially appearing without intervention. Controlled breeding can be achieved by providing separate dimly lit containers with spawning mesh or fine-leaved plants. Conditions with slightly acidic to neutral pH and warmer temperatures are favorable for successful breeding.

Dimorphism and Reproduction

Sexually mature female Pearl 'Danios' are typically larger, rounder, and less colorful compared to males. During spawning, males intensify in coloration while females develop a fuller belly due to egg production. These differences become more pronounced when the fish are in breeding condition.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in various habitats from clear streams with rocky substrates to still waters like ponds and rice paddies, the Pearl 'Danio' is widespread across regions including Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Sumatra. While natural populations are diminishing, commercial breeding in Southeast Asia and Europe helps sustain their presence in the aquarium trade.
