General Description

Brachydanio Jaintianensis, also known as Danio jaintianensis Sen, belongs to the family Cyprinidae. It is a species of danio that typically grows up to 4.5cm in size. Found in the Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, northeastern India, this species is recognized by its distinct body and fin markings, particularly the P, A, and D stripes used for classification.

Aquarium Setup

The ideal tank setup for Brachydanio Jaintianensis involves a heavily planted environment with a dark substrate, resembling a flowing river or stream habitat. A well-planted aquarium with variably-sized rocks, gravel, and large boulders is recommended. Additionally, the inclusion of aquatic plants like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias is beneficial. It is essential to ensure a tightly-fitting cover on the aquarium due to the species' jumping abilities.

Behaviour

This species is peaceful and thrives in groups of at least 8-10 specimens. Keeping them with other small cyprinids that prefer cooler conditions is advisable. Brachydanio Jaintianensis displays schooling behavior by nature, which not only reduces stress but enhances the visual appeal of the aquarium. Males exhibit vibrant colors while competing for female attention in a group setting.

Feeding and Diet

Brachydanio Jaintianensis primarily feeds on insects and their larvae in the wild. In captivity, they accept a varied diet including high-quality dried foods supplemented with live or frozen fare such as bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia. Providing a mix of food types ensures optimal coloration and overall health in these fish.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

While specific reports on the reproduction of Brachydanio Jaintianensis are limited, it is believed to be an egg-scattering spawner without parental care. Conditioning adult fish and setting up controlled spawning environments with suitable substrates and water conditions may encourage breeding. Sexually mature females are typically larger, rounder-bellied, and less colorful compared to males.

Habitat and Distribution

This species primarily inhabits small, slower-moving hill streams in the forested hills of Meghalaya, India. The natural habitat features substrates of gravel and rocks with abundant marginal vegetation. Brachydanio Jaintianensis is endemic to the Brahmaputra River system, specifically known from the Jaintia Hills district. The fish were collected at locations such as Tre Rangriang and Thlu Muwi within their native range.
