General Description
The Orange-Finned 'Danio' (Brachydanio Kyathit) is a peaceful schooling species with variable body patterning, characterized by red to orange finnage and 5-7 dark, longitudinal stripes. It is a small fish, reaching a maximum size of 4.5cm, and is suitable for community tanks due to its adaptable nature.
Aquarium Setup
The Orange-Finned 'Danio' is best kept in a well-planted tank resembling a river or stream, with varied substrates, rocks, and boulders. Maintaining a flow with powerheads is recommended, but excessive current should be avoided. The tank should have a tight-fitting cover to prevent jumping, a key behavior of these fish. For ideal conditions, water hardness should range from 18-90ppm, pH between 6.5-7.5, and a temperature of 16-26°C.
Behaviour
Being a schooling species, it is recommended to keep at least 8-10 Orange-Finned 'Danios' together to reduce stress and enhance coloration through natural competition. They are peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tank mates, making them an excellent choice for community tanks.
Feeding and Diet
The species primarily preys on insects and larvae in the wild but readily accepts various foods in captivity. A balanced diet includes quality dried food supplemented with live or frozen fare like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia to enhance coloration and overall health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Orange-Finned 'Danios' are egg-scattering spawners without parental care. To stimulate breeding, a separate tank with suitable spawning media and water conditions is recommended. Males are typically more colorful and smaller than females, with distinct differences visible during spawning periods.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in the tributaries of the Irrawaddy River drainage in Myanmar, the Orange-Finned 'Danio' thrives in clear, fast-flowing waters with dense marginal vegetation providing ample shade. Different populations may exhibit varied appearances due to their distribution across Kachin State, Sagaing Division, and Chin State.
