General Description
The Dwarf Spotted 'Danio' (Brachydanio Nigrofasciata) is a peaceful species that does not thrive as a community fish due to its adult size and timid nature. It prefers being alone or with similarly-sized species from Myanmar. This schooling fish displays its best colors when kept in a group of 8-10 individuals and should be housed with compatible tank mates for a natural-looking display.
Aquarium Setup
The Dwarf Spotted 'Danio' looks best in a heavily planted tank with a darker substrate and may appear paler in less decorated setups. It thrives in a well-planted aquarium mimicking a flowing river, with rocks, gravel, boulders, and driftwood. Calm water conditions are preferred, and a tightly-fitting cover is essential due to their jumping abilities. Additional powerheads can be used for water flow.
Behaviour
Being a schooling species, Brachydanio Nigrofasciata should be kept in groups of at least 8-10 to reduce stress and promote natural behaviors. Male individuals intensify in coloration when vying for female attention. They are compatible with select species from Myanmar and should not be housed with aggressive or larger tank mates.
Feeding and Diet
These danios primarily feed on insects and larvae in the wild but are adaptable eaters in an aquarium, accepting most foods. A varied diet including dried foods supplemented with live or frozen fare like bloodworms and Daphnia will enhance their coloration and overall health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Brachydanio Nigrofasciata is an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care. To breed them, a separate breeding tank with dim lighting and suitable substrate is recommended. Females release 20-50 eggs per spawning event, and sexually mature females are usually larger and less colorful than males.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to Myanmar, these fish inhabit streams, rivers, and still waters such as ponds and rice paddies. They are found in the Yangon and Bago divisions as well as Mon State, preferring seasonal habitats affected by monsoons. Specific locales include the Ayeyarwady River drainage and the Sittaung and Bago rivers.
