Behaviour

The Zebra Danio is a peaceful species that can coexist harmoniously with various popular aquarium fish, including other small cyprinids, tetras, livebearers, rainbowfishes, anabantoids, catfishes, and loaches. Maintaining them in a group of at least 8-10 specimens is recommended as they are schooling fish by nature. Larger groups not only make the fish less nervous but also enhance the visual display, leading to better color displays by the males as they compete for female attention.

Feeding and Diet

The Zebra Danio is a micropredator in the wild, primarily feeding on aquatic crustaceans and invertebrates like mosquito larvae. In captivity, they are not picky eaters and readily accept a varied diet. Offering a mix of high-quality dried foods along with small live and frozen options such as Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms is ideal for their health and well-being.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

These fish are prolific breeders and are popular among hobbyists who are new to breeding fish. As egg-scatterers, they exhibit no parental care. Conditioning the adult group in a heavily planted aquarium can lead to spontaneous spawning, but controlled breeding setups yield more fry. Sexually mature females are larger, rounder-bellied, and less colorful than males, especially evident during spawning when males intensify in coloration and females fill with eggs.

Habitat and Distribution

Zebra Danios have been described as inhabitants of the Kosi River, a tributary in northern India. Originally believed to range from Pakistan through India to Myanmar, recent data suggests a more restricted distribution due to potential misidentifications and habitat degradation. Their habitats include slow or non-flowing waters with silt substrates and overhanging vegetation. Seasonal variations due to monsoon rains impact the habitats, making them adapt to different conditions throughout the year.

Aquarium Setup

For the optimal setup of a Zebra Danio aquarium, a heavily planted tank with dark substrate is suggested to showcase their vibrant colors effectively. The addition of floating plants, driftwood, or branches to create shaded areas and diffuse light is beneficial. Moderate filtration and decorations that mimic their natural environment, such as vegetation and dimly lit areas, contribute to their well-being and overall comfort.
