General Description
Brevibora Cheeya, a member of the Cyprinidae family, is a small fish species, measuring up to 5.5cm in length. This species is comparatively rare in the aquarium trade and is discerned from its similar congener, B. dorsiocellata, by specific morphological traits, including lateral line scales, adult size, and head length.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Brevibora Cheeya, it is advisable to maintain a tank of at least 72 litres. The species thrives in a well-planted tank with a dark substrate, where they can display their best colors. Driftwood roots and branches can be added to create ample shady spots. Moreover, using dried leaf litter mimics their natural habitat, fosters microorganism growth, and provides additional cover for the fish.
Behaviour
Trevibora Cheeya is known to be a peaceful fish that thrives in a community tank environment. It displays schooling behavior and is recommended to be kept in groups of 8-10 individuals. Interestingly, males exhibit vibrant colors while competing for female attention, making the school a visually appealing display.
Feeding and Diet
In their natural habitat, Brevibora Cheeya likely feeds on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In captivity, they accept dried foods but should be offered small live and frozen prey such as Daphnia and Artemia to ensure proper nutrition.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
There is currently no recorded information on the reproduction of Brevibora Cheeya. Mature females are distinguished by a rounder belly and a slightly larger size compared to males.
Habitat and Distribution
This species is native to states in Peninsular Malaysia, provinces in Sumatra (Indonesia), and the island of Banka. They are typically found in slow-flowing acidic waters with high fish diversity, sharing habitat with various other fish species. The species originates from coastal heath forests with a substrate mix of sand and peat.
Etymology
The name Brevibora is derived from Latin, implying 'shorts' in allusion to the few predorsal vertebrae, whereas cheeya refers to Chinese deities, highlighting the species' relatively larger size compared to B. dorsiocellata.
