General Description
The Black Oranda Goldfish, a member of the carp family, is known for its jet-black coloration with subtle golden highlights, glossy black fins, and a distinctive hood covering its head. This metallic-scaled fish closely resembles Veil Tail goldfish varieties and belongs to the Carassius auratus species. Originating from Asia, Japan, and China, Fancy Goldfish like the Black Oranda are popular globally due to controlled breeding programs.
Aquarium Setup
Black Oranda Goldfish thrive in 30-gallon tanks or larger aquariums, as well as ponds of 180 gallons or more. They prefer a substrate of fine gravel or well-rounded river rocks and appreciate hardy, cold-water plants. However, keep in mind that they are diggers and may disrupt delicate plants. (see table)
Behaviour
Being generally hardy and peaceful, Black Oranda Goldfish exhibit a specific courtship ritual during breeding. Breeding often results in a large number of eggs, with fry hatching within five to six days.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Black Oranda Goldfish enjoy a diet consisting of various dried and live foods. It's essential to limit their protein intake to 30% of their diet and provide them with goldfish flake or pellet food for proper nutrition.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Black Oranda Goldfish can result in up to 1,000 eggs, with specific feeding requirements for the fry to thrive. Dimorphically, there are no significant differences between male and female Black Oranda Goldfish.
