General Description
The Neon Hatchet Fish, scientifically known as Chela Cachius, boasts a distinctly deep body that fits approximately 3.2-4.6 times in its standard length. Belonging to the Cyprinidae family, this species is the sole member of its genus, although potential additional taxa might exist, especially in Myanmar. Phylogenetic studies indicate a close relation to the Laubuka assemblage.
Aquarium Setup
For an 80-liter tank hosting Neon Hatchet Fish, consider creating a heavily planted environment with a dark substrate to enhance their coloration. Adding floating plants and driftwood can provide cover and diffuse light. Although not high-maintenance, ensure a tightly-fitting cover due to their jumping prowess. Water conditions should ideally maintain a temperature range of 18-24°C, with a pH of 6.0-8.0 and hardness between 36-215ppm.
Behaviour
Not inherently aggressive, Neon Hatchet Fish can be intimidating to slower or timid tankmates due to their active and voracious feeding behavior. It is best kept with similarly-sized and robust fish species such as cyprinids, loaches, cichlids, catfish, and characins. Being a schooling species, maintaining a group of at least 8-10 individuals reduces their nervousness and enhances the tank's natural look.
Feeding and Diet
In the wild, Neon Hatchet Fish primarily feed on aquatic invertebrates. In an aquarium setting, they are unfussy eaters and readily accept a varied diet. Offer them a mix of high-quality dried foods and supplement with small live or frozen options such as Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms to ensure balanced nutrition.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Unfortunately, there is no recorded information on the reproduction of Neon Hatchet Fish. Thus, details about their mating habits, breeding preferences, or any dimorphic features remain unknown.
Habitat and Distribution
Neon Hatchet Fish are found in various aquatic environments across regions like Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and potentially Myanmar. They are commonly located in the Ganges and Brahmaputra river systems in northern India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, although occurrences in Myanmar could be mistaken. Their habitat includes rivers, streams, ponds, oxbows, canals, ditches, beels, and tanks.
