General Description

Crossocheilus elegans is easily distinguished by its color pattern, featuring a blackish midlateral stripe from the gill opening to the caudal fin base. The fish has a pale yellowish-brown stripe separating the dark brown dorsum, unlike other Crossocheilus species. It was initially known as Epalzeorhynchos kalliurus and later considered a synonym of Crossocheilus cobitis before being assigned to C. cobitis by some authors. Members of the genus have 8 branched dorsal fin rays, immobile rostral lobes, lack a dorsal spine, and exhibit unconnected upper and lower lips.

Aquarium Setup

For Crossocheilus elegans, a tank of at least 300 litres should be provided. The setup should replicate its natural habitat, focusing on rocky substrates with fast-flowing water typical of headwater hill streams. The presence of riffle zones is essential for mimicking the natural environment. (See table for details).

Behaviour

In the aquarium, Crossocheilus elegans may ascend into midwater for feeding. When comfortable, they are often observed browsing on the biofilm that develops on rock formations within the tank.

Feeding and Diet

These fish are 'aufwuchs' grazers, primarily feeding on algae, diatoms, and phytoplankton in the wild. In captivity, a diet of high-quality dried food with added Spirulina is recommended. Fresh vegetable matter such as shelled peas, blanched courgette, and chopped fruit should also be included to provide a balanced diet and avoid excessive fat deposits or organ degeneration.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the reproduction and dimorphism of Crossocheilus elegans is not provided.

Habitat and Distribution

Crossocheilus elegans is native to the Segama and Kinabatangan river systems in Sabah state, eastern Malaysia, specifically in northern Borneo. The fish is commonly found in or near riffle zones of headwater hill streams with rocky substrates. It shares its habitat with a variety of species, including members of Cyprinidae, Balitoridae, Sisoridae, and Mastacembelidae.
