General Description
Cyclocheilichthys lagleri, commonly known as Lagler's Barbonymus, is a peaceful and distinctive freshwater fish species. It belongs to the Cyprinidae family and can reach a maximum size of 20.0cm. This species is characterized by possessing 20 circumpeduncular scales and lacking barbels entirely. Members of Cyclocheilichthys are recognized by features such as a serrated dorsal fin spine, a conical snout, and small, subterminal mouth.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, Lagler's Barbonymus thrives in larger aquarium setups with a minimum tank size of 650 litres. The water conditions should have a pH range of 6.0-8.0, a hardness of 36-268ppm, and a temperature between 20-26°C. While they prefer well-oxygenated and clean water, completely bare tank arrangements should be avoided. It is recommended to keep them in groups of at least six, as they are gregarious by nature and display better coloration in the presence of conspecifics.
Behaviour
Lagler's Barbonymus is an ideal resident for larger, well-furnished community setups. However, large adults may intimidate slow-moving or timid tank mates. This species is generally gregarious and less nervous when kept in a group, resulting in a more natural and aesthetically pleasing display. Suitable tank mates include various cyprinids, loaches, cichlids, catfish, and characins.
Feeding and Diet
In their natural habitat, Lagler's Barbonymus preys on small items such as insects, insect larvae, crustaceans, and fish fry. To maintain optimal health in an aquarium environment, they should be offered a diet of small live and frozen foods like chironomid larvae, Daphnia, Artemia, along with high-quality dried flakes and granules on a regular basis.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Information regarding the reproduction of Cyclocheilichthys lagleri is currently unrecorded. Sexually mature females are likely to be thicker-bodied compared to males, suggesting possible sexual dimorphism within the species.
Habitat and Distribution
Lagler's Barbonymus is primarily found in the Chao Phraya river system in central Thailand and the lower Mekong basin in Thailand and Cambodia. They are observed in low altitude floodplains and may migrate to inundated areas during the wet season.
