General Description
Assorted Koi - Domestic, members of the Cyprinidae family, are highly valued for their resilience and diverse color and pattern variations. Typically found in shades of white, yellow, and orange, these farm-raised Koi are considered the royalty of pond fish. Originating from Japan, Domestic Koi are now predominantly bred in fish farms in the southern USA, with a lifespan of 25 to 35 years in captivity.
Aquarium Setup
The ideal environment for Domestic Koi includes a pond with a capacity of over 1,000 gallons, featuring a fine gravel substrate, sturdy rocks, and robust plants. To safeguard plant roots from the Koi's digging behavior, strategically place large rocks around the base of plants. Adequate filtration is essential to uphold optimal water quality conditions for these fish.
Behaviour
Domestic Koi typically exhibit peaceful temperaments and can be easily acclimated to hand feeding. They are known for their voracious appetite but are generally well-mannered tankmates, making them enjoyable companions in a pond setting.
Feeding and Diet
An omnivorous species, Domestic Koi thrive on a diet of high-quality pellets or flakes. While they are enthusiastic eaters, it is recommended to gradually transition their diet from live foods to crushed flakes and pellets. With patience, Koi can be trained to accept food directly from their keeper's hand.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Male Domestic Koi can be distinguished by their concave anal section and, occasionally, breeding spots on the head. Spawning events can yield a large number of eggs, up to 1,000, with fry hatching within 4 to 7 days depending on water temperature. Newly hatched fry should be fed small live foods or frozen daphnia initially, gradually transitioning to crushed flakes and pellets as they mature. Their distinctive colors typically develop within 3 to 12 weeks.
Habitat and Distribution
Originally hailing from Japan, Domestic Koi have spread to fish farms in the southern regions of the USA. Their adaptability to a wide range of temperatures (2.2-32.2°C), along with the ability to thrive in varied water parameters (pH 6.8-7.2, KH 2-12), has made them a popular choice for pond enthusiasts worldwide.
