General Description
The Danionella Priapus, a member of the Cyprinidae family, is a species with a small adult size of around 1.6cm. It is characterized by males having a unique conical projection of the genital papilla and 8 pectoral-fin rays.
Aquarium Setup
To create an ideal environment for Danionella Priapus, a planted tank with gentle water movement is recommended. Adding vegetation cover on the surface, such as Taxiphyllum, provides a food source for both fry and adults. A matured air-powered sponge filter unit is best suited for their tank setup, with water conditions being relatively neutral with a pH range of 6.0-8.0.
Behaviour
This species exhibits schooling behavior by nature, so it is suggested to keep them in groups of at least a dozen individuals. Due to their small size, they are best kept alone or with other small, similar species like Celestichthys, Boraras, or Microdevario.
Feeding and Diet
Danionella Priapus is quite easily fed, accepting a variety of foods such as crushed dried foods, chopped Tubifex, Artemia nauplii, microworm, and sifted Daphnia. It is essential to provide a varied diet for the fish to maintain optimal health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding this species in aquariums has been achieved successfully. The females are deeper-bodied compared to males. Males have a unique conical projection of the genital papilla and display distinct sexual dimorphism, with females carrying visible eggs when gravid.
Habitat and Distribution
The Danionella Priapus is known only from its type locality in India, particularly the Jorai River, a tributary of the Sankosh. In the wild, they inhabit sluggish streams with clear water, sandy substrate, and dense aquatic vegetation, often coexisting with other fish species like Dario dario.
