General Description

  • Dawkinsia exclamatio, formerly known as Puntius exclamatio, is a species of cyprinid fish that is rare in the aquarium trade. It belongs to the order Cypriniformes and is characterized by a unique color pattern with two black blotches on each flank.

Aquarium Setup

  • Setting up an aquarium for D. exclamatio involves mimicking a flowing stream or river environment, with a substrate of variously sized rocks, sand, and driftwood. Hardy aquatic plants like Microsorum and Anubias spp. can be added. Regular water changes of 30-50% volume are crucial to maintain excellent water quality.

Behaviour

  • D. exclamatio is a schooling species that thrives in groups of 8-10 individuals. It is best kept with peaceful fish of larger size and bold disposition to prevent intimidation. Males focus on maintaining hierarchy within the group and aggression is generally contained within the school.

Feeding and Diet

  • As an omnivorous species, D. exclamatio feeds on various food sources like worms, insects, crustaceans, and plant material in the wild. In captivity, a balanced diet of live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, Daphnia, alongside high-quality dried flakes and granules is recommended for optimal health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

  • Reproduction in D. exclamatio involves egg scattering and free spawning behavior. The males exhibit more intense coloration, tubercles on the head during spawning, and some may develop filamentous rays in the dorsal fin. Females are slightly larger, heavier-bodied, and less colorful.

Habitat and Distribution

  • Found in the riverine habitats of the Kallada River in Kerala, India, D. exclamatio prefers clear, shallow water with granite boulders. The species may be endemic to the Kallada system, which eventually drains into the Ashtamudi Lake, showcasing habitat specificity and restricted distribution.
