General Description

The Desmopuntius Hexazona, also known as the "Pentazona" Barb, is a small cyprinid fish species native to parts of southern Borneo, eastern Sumatra, Singapore, and the Malay Peninsula. This species is a popular choice in the aquarium trade and is often confused with its congener, D. pentazona. They are closely related and share similar appearances, but D. hexazona lacks a dark marking at the posterior base of the dorsal fin, which is present in D. pentazona.

Aquarium Setup

For an ideal aquarium setup for the Desmopuntius Hexazona, it is recommended to create a heavily-planted environment resembling a forest stream. This setup should include soft substrates, dim lighting, roots, branches, and leaf litter. Adding aquatic plants like Microsorum, Taxiphyllum, or Cryptocoryne species can enhance the habitat. Filtration does not need to be overly strong as these fish are accustomed to sluggish waters. Refer to the provided table for specific water parameter requirements.

Behaviour

The "Pentazona" Barb thrives best when kept in a peaceful community tank with other Southeast Asian fish species of similar size. It is a schooling fish by nature and should be housed in groups of at least 8-10 individuals. Maintaining them in decent numbers reduces skittish behavior and enhances the display of their vibrant colors. They may exhibit territorial behavior, especially during breeding periods.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, the Desmopuntius Hexazona primarily feeds on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In an aquarium setting, they will accept a variety of foods, including dried flakes and pellets. However, to maintain optimal coloration and breeding condition, it is recommended to supplement their diet with live or frozen foods like Daphnia and Artemia. Regular feeding with small live and frozen fare will ensure the best health and vibrancy in these fish.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Like most small cyprinids, Desmopuntius Hexazona are egg-scattering free spawners that exhibit no parental care. To encourage breeding, a separate tank with appropriate conditions should be set up. Adult males are slightly smaller, slimmer, and more colorful than females. Females will scatter eggs on surfaces, and attentive breeding conditions are necessary to maximize fry production.

Habitat and Distribution

Desmopuntius Hexazona typically inhabits peat swamps and blackwater streams in regions like southern Borneo, eastern Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula. They prefer waters stained brown with minimal dissolved mineral content and pH levels as low as 3.0-4.0. In captivity, replicating their natural habitat with littered substrates, submerged vegetation, and dim lighting can promote their well-being. For exact native locations, see the provided distribution information.
