General Description

Species: Devario Acuticephalus
Family: Cyprinidae
Classification Order: Cypriniformes
Etymology: Devario appears to be derived from a local vernacular name for the type species of the genus Cyprinus. Acuticephala is derived from Latin, meaning 'sharpened head.'

Aquarium Setup

In setting up an aquarium for Devario Acuticephalus, it is recommended to mimic a flowing stream or river with a substrate of variably-sized rocks, sand, fine gravel, and small boulders. Hardy aquatic plants like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias spp. can be added. Clean water with good oxygenation, moderate water movement, and regular 30-50% volume water changes are crucial. The tank should have a secure cover due to the species' jumping propensity.

Behaviour

Devario Acuticephalus is a peaceful schooling species best kept in groups of at least 8-10 individuals. When well-maintained, they display vibrant colors as males compete for female attention. They coexist well with other small, peaceful cyprinids and bottom-dwellers like loaches and catfishes.

Feeding and Diet

These fish are mostly insectivorous in nature but adapt well to various foods in captivity. A staple diet of high-quality dried food supplemented with live or frozen options like bloodworm, Daphnia, and Artemia will enhance coloration and overall health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Devario Acuticephalus are egg-scattering free spawners without parental care. To encourage breeding, a separate tank with dim lighting and spawning substrate is recommended. Females appear rounder and less colorful than males. The incubation period for eggs is temperature-dependent, with fry requiring small live foods initially.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in Manipur and Nagaland states in northeastern India, Devario Acuticephalus inhabits small hill streams with gravel substrates and marginal vegetation. Occurring in the Manipur river basin and tributaries, the species is confined to an area of less than 15,000 square kilometers.
