General DescriptionDevario Apogon, a member of the Cypriniformes order and Cyprinidae family, is a species distinguishable by narrow, indistinct vertical bars on the anterior flank and a wide, tapering horizontal stripe on the posterior. It lacks barbels and a lateral line, with characteristic body and fin stripes labelled as P, A, and D. The genus Devario was established in 2003 and is known for its polyphyletic grouping with related genera. The species' distribution includes regions in China and possibly northeastern Myanmar.

Aquarium SetupFor captive care, Devario Apogon requires a well-maintained tank resembling a flowing stream or river, with a substrate of rocks, sand, and gravel. Driftwood and hardy aquatic plants like Microsorum or Anubias can be added. Clean, oxygen-rich water with moderate flow and a tightly-fitting cover is essential. Water conditions should be maintained at a pH of 6.0-7.5, a temperature of 15-24°C, and a hardness of 18-143ppm.

BehaviourThe behavior of Devario Apogon remains unknown, but its nature is unlikely to be aggressive. It is recommended to keep a group of six or more individuals as a minimum to foster a comfortable environment for the fish.

Feeding and DietIn its natural habitat, Devario Apogon primarily preys on insects and their larvae, displaying an adaptable feeding behavior. In captivity, it can be fed a staple diet of high-quality dried foods supplemented with small live and frozen fare such as bloodworm, Daphnia, and Artemia to enhance coloration and overall conditioning.

Reproduction & DimorphismSexual dimorphism in Devario Apogon is evident in sexually mature females being rounder-bellied, less colorful, and slightly larger than males. During nuptial displays, both sexes exhibit an orange-red coloration, with males intensifying their darker elements.

Habitat and DistributionDevario Apogon inhabits larger rivers, tributaries, and streams with varying water clarity and substrates including mud, gravel, sand, and bedrock. Its adaptability is demonstrated in its presence in polluted streams and clear water rivers. The species is abundant in parts of China and possibly northeastern Myanmar within the Daying river watershed.
