Behaviour:

The Queen Danio is not inherently aggressive but its constant activity and vigorous feeding habits may unsettle slow-moving or timid tankmates, making it more suitable for larger aquariums housing robust, similarly-sized fishes. It tends to do well in groups of 8-10 individuals, as this reduces nervousness and enhances the natural appearance of the display. Maintaining a group also helps contain any aggression, as the fish focus on establishing hierarchy within the group, with males showcasing better colors in the presence of rivals.

Feeding and Diet:

In nature, the Queen Danio chiefly preys on insects and their larvae, making it likely to accept various foods in captivity. A good quality dried food can serve as a staple, supplemented with small live and frozen options like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia, for optimal coloration and condition.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:

Queen Danios are egg-scattering free spawners with no parental care. When conditioned well, they spawn frequently, and in suitable tank setups, fry may appear without intervention. A controlled approach involving a separate breeding tank with proper conditions can maximize fry yield. Sexually mature females are rounder-bellied, less colorful, and slightly larger than males.

Habitat and Distribution:

These fish predominantly inhabit submontane hill streams and upper parts of small rivers with clear, oxygenated water, gravel, rocks, and some vegetation. Their native range includes western and southern Thailand, northern Peninsular Malaysia, and surrounding small islands. Though sometimes linked to northern India, Myanmar, and Laos, these references likely correspond to other species.
