General Description

The Fireline Devario, scientifically known as Devario Sondhii, is a small species of fish belonging to the family Cyprinidae. It can grow up to 4.5cm in size and is characterized by its unique dark cleithral spot located behind the gill opening.

Aquarium Setup

The Fireline Devario thrives in densely-planted tanks with the addition of floating plants to diffuse light. It prefers sluggish waters and should not be kept in biologically immature aquaria. Water conditions should be monitored, with a pH range of 6.5-7.5, hardness of 18-90ppm, and a temperature between 20-26°C. Weekly water changes of 30-50% volume are recommended to maintain optimal conditions.

Behaviour

This species is peaceful and sociable, needing to be kept in groups of at least 8-10 specimens to minimize stress and promote natural behaviors. It's a schooling fish that displays vibrant colors, especially when males compete for female attention. The Fireline Devario can coexist with other small cyprinids, bottom-dwellers such as loaches and catfish, freshwater gobies, and freshwater shrimp in a well-oxygenated aquarium setup.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, the Fireline Devario feeds mainly on insects and their larvae. In captivity, they are unfussy eaters and accept various foods. A staple diet of high-quality dried food supplemented with live or frozen options like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia will enhance coloration and overall health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction in Fireline Devario involves egg-scattering and occurs frequently in well-conditioned groups. To maximize fry survival, a separate breeding tank with suitable conditions should be set up. Sexually mature females are larger, rounder-bellied, and less colorful than males.

Habitat and Distribution

The Fireline Devario originates from the southern Shan States in Myanmar, particularly near Hopong in areas of permanently-flooded grasslands with transparent waters supporting dense aquatic plant growth. It shares its habitat with various fish species like Celestichthys margaritatus and Channa harcourtbutleri.
