General Description

The Blue Moon 'Danio' (Devario Xyrops) is a species of fish classified under the order Cypriniformes and the family Cyprinidae. It is known for its distinct color pattern with dark blotches and stripes on its body.

Aquarium Setup

The Blue Moon 'Danio' thrives in an aquarium environment resembling a flowing stream or river, with a substrate of rocks, sand, fine gravel, and driftwood. Hardy aquatic plants like Microsorum or Anubias can be added. Clean water with good oxygenation and moderate flow is essential. Regular water changes and a tightly-fitted cover are necessary. (see table)

Behaviour

Although not aggressive, the Blue Moon 'Danio' can be vigorous during feeding, potentially bothering slower or timid tankmates. It is recommended to keep them with robust, similarly-sized fish in larger aquariums. They are schooling fish and should ideally be kept in groups of 8-10 for a more natural display.

Feeding and Diet

The Blue Moon 'Danio' primarily feeds on insects and larvae in the wild but is an adaptable feeder in aquariums. Their diet can consist of quality dried foods supplemented with live or frozen options like bloodworms and brine shrimp for optimal coloration and health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

These fish are egg-scattering free spawners and show no parental care. Controlled breeding tanks can help maximize fry yield. Sexually mature females are larger, rounder-bellied, and less colorful than males. Eggs typically hatch within 24-36 hours, and fry can be fed Paramecium and later transitioned to Artemia nauplii and powdered dry foods.

Habitat and Distribution

The Blue Moon 'Danio' is native to small streams and rivers in the western slope of the Rakhine Yoma mountain range in Myanmar. These habitats feature rocky substrates and are characterized by seasonal changes in water depth, influencing the collection of fishes during wet and dry seasons.
