General Description

Discherodontus Ashmeadi, a member of the Cyprinidae family, is a poorly-documented species in the aquarium trade, known for its delicate nature and difficulty in shipping. Belonging to the Cypriniformes order, it is characterized by a schooling behavior and a preference for clear, fast-flowing minor rivers and forest streams. This species can reach a maximum size of 13.5cm and is best kept in a group of at least six individuals to reduce nervousness and enhance color display among males.

Aquarium Setup

Discherodontus Ashmeadi thrives in larger, well-maintained tanks with hiding places and a setup resembling a flowing river, including variably-sized rocks, gravel, large boulders, and driftwood. The tank can host hardy plant species like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias attached to the decor, with bright lighting to promote algae growth for the fish to graze on. Ideal water conditions include a pH range of 6.0-7.5, hardness between 36-215ppm, and a temperature of 23-26°C. Weekly water changes of 30-50% tank volume are recommended to maintain pristine conditions for the fish.

Behaviour

Known for its peaceful nature, Discherodontus Ashmeadi prefers the lower part of the tank in a community setup with non-aggressive species. It exhibits schooling behavior by nature and displays its best colors when competing for female attention. Active during the day, this species moves into deeper, fast-flowing water to feed and rests in shallower, calmer areas at night. It is intolerant to the accumulation of organic waste and requires well-oxygenated water to thrive.

Feeding and Diet

Studies based on stomach analyses of wild specimens reveal that Discherodontus Ashmeadi predominantly preys on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. In captivity, they should be offered live and frozen foods such as chironomid larvae, Daphnia, Artemia, along with high-quality dried flakes and granules. In a river-style environment, they tend to browse on biofilm formed on exposed rockwork.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the reproduction of Discherodontus Ashmeadi is currently unrecorded. Sexually mature females are characterized by being noticeably thicker-bodied and larger than males. Males exhibit behavior to compete for female attention, displaying their best colors in the process.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to the Mae Klong and Mekong river basins in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, Discherodontus Ashmeadi is found in clear, fast-flowing rivers and forest streams. Its habitat typically includes rocky rapids interspersed with deeper pools and submerged roots. While the species is endemic to the middle Mekong, local populations have been identified in disparate areas. In Laos, they have been collected from the Xe Bangfai river, a tributary of the Mekong threatened by damming, impacting local biodiversity.
