General Description

The Epalzeorhynchos Munense, a species within the Cyprinidae family, is a fish characterized by its absence of a dorsal spine, a thin membrane connecting the upper and lower lips, and unique rostral lobes. It typically grows up to 12.0cm in length and is primarily an aufwuchs grazer, feeding on algae, small crustaceans, and insect larvae.

Aquarium Setup

The Epalzeorhynchos Munense thrives in aquariums with a minimum size of 240 litres, designed to mimic a flowing river. The tank setup should include a substrate of rocks and gravel, water-worn boulders, driftwood, and aquatic plants like Microsorum and Anubias. Bright lighting is recommended to encourage algae growth for grazing.

Behaviour

As the Epalzeorhynchos Munense matures, it becomes increasingly territorial and can exhibit high levels of aggression towards similar-looking species. While some individuals may form alliances with other species, proper research is crucial before housing them together. They are best kept with robust, schooling cyprinids and may require their own territory as they age.

Feeding and Diet

This species primarily feeds on algae, small crustaceans, insect larvae, and plant material in the wild. In captivity, they should be offered a varied diet of small live and frozen foods, along with quality dried flakes, granules, and vegetables like shelled peas and cucumber. Regular feeding promotes their best colors and condition.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Epalzeorhynchos Munense has not been bred in captivity or commercially; however, other species in the genus are commercially farmed for the aquarium trade using hormones. Sexually mature females of this species are typically thicker-bodied than males.

Habitat and Distribution

While the specific habitat preferences of Epalzeorhynchos Munense are unconfirmed, other members of the genus are typically found in flowing rivers, streams, and occasionally in seasonally inundated floodplains. The species has been recorded in Thailand and Laos, with potential occurrences in Cambodia as well.
