General Description

The Esomus Longimanus, commonly known as the Mekong Flying Barb, is a species characterized by greatly-enlarged pectoral fins and two pairs of barbels, with the maxillary pair being notably long, often reaching the pectoral fins. It is part of the Cyprinidae family and can grow up to 8.0cm in size. The species is found in the Mekong river basin in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, as well as the Tonlé Sap river and lake system in Cambodia, preferring shallow, slow-moving waters with dense aquatic vegetation.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for the Esomus Longimanus, a minimum tank size of 160 litres is recommended, along with water conditions of hardness ranging from 18-215ppm, a pH level between 6.0-8.0, and a temperature range of 20-28°C. It is advised to add floating plants and driftwood to create a natural environment and reduce skittish behavior, as well as ensuring a tightly-fitting cover due to the species' jumping abilities.

Behaviour

The Mekong Flying Barb has been observed in various types of habitats, showing a preference for slow-moving or standing waters with dense aquatic vegetation such as ditches, marshes, and rice paddies. The species can be skittish if not provided with adequate hiding spaces and prefers subdued lighting conditions.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, the Esomus Longimanus feeds on terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates and their larvae. In an aquarium setting, they accept dried foods of appropriate size but should also be offered live and frozen options like Daphnia, Artemia, and chironomid larvae to ensure a balanced diet.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the reproduction habits of the Esomus Longimanus is currently unreported. However, sexually dimorphic characteristics suggest that adult males are slimmer and slightly smaller compared to females, a common trait among the species.

Habitat and Distribution

The Esomus Longimanus is known to inhabit the Mekong river basin in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It can also be found in the Tonlé Sap river and lake system in Cambodia, favoring environments like rice paddies, marshes, and other locations with dense aquatic vegetation.
