General Description

Folifer brevifilis, commonly known as Brevifilis, is rare in the aquarium trade and not usually recommended for home aquariums due to its adult size, reaching up to 30.0cm in length. It is distinguishable by its pointed snout, inferior mouth, and a lower lip with a large median lobe.

Aquarium Setup

The ideal tank setup for F. brevifilis mimics a flowing stream or river, with a substrate of rocks, sand, fine gravel, and water-worn boulders. Aquatic plants like Microsorum and Anubias spp. can be added for decoration. Clean water with a high oxygen content and moderate water movement is crucial. Regular water changes of 30-50% volume are necessary, and a secure cover is recommended due to the species being prone to jumping.

Behaviour

F. brevifilis is not suited for a general community tank due to its size but can coexist with similarly-sized cyprinids and catfish. It prefers conditions akin to its natural habitat and is intolerant of organic waste build-up.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Brevifilis feeds on molluscs, aquatic invertebrates, algae, and detritus. When kept in captivity, a varied diet rich in proteins can help maintain their health and vitality.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Very little is known about the breeding habits of F. brevifilis. Nuptial females are speculated to be thicker-bodied compared to males, but clear sexual dimorphism details are lacking.

Habitat and Distribution

Brevifilis primarily inhabits the flowing sections of major rivers, avoiding standing waters. It can be found in the Mekong river system in Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, as well as in southern China, Myanmar, and Thailand. The species has also been recorded in smaller basins in Vietnam and China, including the islands of Hainan and Hong Kong.
