General Description

Garra bispinosa is distinguished by its quadrate, anteriorly-directed proboscis adorned with a large tubercle on each lobe, a deep groove across the snout, 34-35 lateral line scales, and a relatively small mental disc. The genus Garra is known for its enigmatic nature, with new taxa frequently described and existing identifications questioned. Garra species are typically part of the Labeoninae/Cyprininae subfamily or tribe Labeonini, with potential future division due to polyphyletic composition.

Aquarium Setup

For an aquarium setup suitable for Garra bispinosa, see the table below. It is recommended to provide a setup that mimics flowing water conditions, as seen in its natural habitat.

Behaviour

Garra species possess a modified lower lip forming a mental adhesive disc, enabling them to cling to surfaces in turbulent waters. Most species have keratinised jaw margins used for scraping food from substrates. Some Garra species exhibit environmental specializations such as reduced eyes in hypogean forms and adaptations for thermal spring survival.

Feeding and Diet

These fish primarily feed on food items found on the substrate, using their specialized jaws to scrape and consume organic matter. Offering a diet rich in algae, small invertebrates, and commercial sinking pellets is ideal for their nutritional needs.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the reproductive behavior and dimorphic characteristics of Garra bispinosa is not provided. However, like many Cypriniformes, they likely engage in egg-laying reproduction with possible courtship displays to attract mates.

Habitat and Distribution

Garra bispinosa is exclusively found in the Daying Jiang tributary in Yingjiang, Yunnan Province, China. Its habitat preferences are assumed to include flowing waters, a common habitat characteristic for most Garra species. The habitat also hosts a variety of other fish species, including congener Garra rotundinasus, cyprinids, and cichlids.
