General Description

The Garra Cambodgiensis, commonly known as False Sae, is characterized by its dark lateral body stripe that terminates at the caudal peduncle and an additional lighter stripe dorsally. This species is often confused with similar-looking Crossocheilus species but can be differentiated by its prominent rostral barbels and modified lower lip forming an adhesive "sucker."

Aquarium Setup

Setting up an aquarium for the Garra Cambodgiensis requires a well-maintained environment resembling a flowing stream. It is recommended to use variably-sized, water-worn rocks, sand, fine gravel, and driftwood as the substrate. Hardy aquatic plants such as Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias can be added, with clean, well-oxygenated water and bright lighting to promote biofilm growth.

Behaviour

The False Sae is relatively peaceful but may display hierarchical disputes within their group, involving fin flaring and body coloration changes. When housed singly, they can exhibit aggression towards similar-shaped fishes and are recommended to be kept in groups of 3-4 or more to reduce aggressive behavior. They tend to form loose aggregations in the wild but are not particularly tolerant of conspecifics.

Feeding and Diet

Although the False Sae will graze on algae if available, they are not exclusive herbivores. Their diet should include a variety of meaty foods such as chironomid larvae, Tubifex, Artemia, and prawns. It is essential to offer sinking dried foods with a high vegetable content and occasional fresh fruits and vegetables like cucumber or spinach. Homemade gelatine-bound recipes are also beneficial for their nutrition.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

A study revealed that inducing spawning with hormones for the False Sae was successful, with the fry fed on rotifers and Moina initially. Sexually mature males develop bright red mouthparts during spawning, while females are thicker-bodied. Both sexes develop tubercules on the head and snout, more prominently seen in males.

Habitat and Distribution

Garra Cambodgiensis is native to the central and lower parts of the Mekong River basin, including regions in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, as well as the Chao Phraya and Mae Klong drainages in Thailand. They prefer swiftly-flowing headwaters with clear, oxygen-rich water and are often found in streams modified by irrigation work alongside various other fish species.
