General Description:
Gymnostomus lineatus, commonly known as Lineated Garra, is a species within the family Cyprinidae. This fish is identified by its possession of a pair of small maxillary barbels, absence of rostral barbels, faint lateral stripes along each flank, and a body depth that fits 3.5-3.8 times in standard length with 34-35 lateral line scales.
Aquarium Setup:
Creating an environment resembling its natural habitat is vital for Lineated Garra. A well-cycled tank of at least 30 gallons will provide ample space for swimming. The aquarium should have sandy substrate, rocks, and driftwood to mimic a riverine ecosystem. Dense vegetation and hiding spots should be incorporated to offer security to the fish. Water parameters must be maintained at a temperature of 22-26°C, pH of 6.5-7.5, and hardness of 5-12 dKH (see table).
Behaviour:
Lineated Garra are known to be calm and peaceful fish that exhibit shoaling behavior. They prefer to be in the company of their species or other peaceful tank mates. These fish are active during the day and spend their time foraging for food in the substrate.
Feeding and Diet:
In their natural habitat, Lineated Garra are omnivorous, feeding on algae, small insects, and other invertebrates. In an aquarium setting, they can be fed a varied diet consisting of high-quality flakes, pellets, live, and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables.
Reproduction & Dimorphism:
Information regarding the reproductive habits and sexual dimorphism of Gymnostomus lineatus is limited. Further research is required to understand the breeding behavior and physical distinctions between male and female individuals.
Habitat and Distribution:
The Lineated Garra is native to the middle to lower Mekong River basin in southern China, Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia. They can also be found in the Chao Phraya watershed in central Thailand. Typically, these fish inhabit mainstream rivers and occasionally enter smaller tributaries and inundated fields in the Mekong basin.
