The Orangefin Labeo, scientifically known as Labeo Calbasu, belongs to the Cyprinidae family and can reach a maximum size of 80.0cm. The species is found in large, slow-moving or still bodies of water, typically inhabiting the lower reaches of major rivers, lakes, and man-made reservoirs. Its distribution spans major river systems in Pakistan, Nepal, most of India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and southern China.
Aquarium Setup
For keeping the Orangefin Labeo in an aquarium, a minimum tank size of 10000 litres is required. The setup should include a large, mature filter system, weekly water changes ranging from 50-70% of the tank volume, and the provision of highly-oxygenated water with a degree of movement.
Behaviour
The Orangefin Labeo is known to be an important food and game fish in its native habitat but is not considered suitable for home aquariums due to its specific requirements and behaviors.
Feeding and Diet
This species primarily feeds at the benthic level, foraging on aquatic vegetation, organic detritus, small molluscs, filamentous algae, and diatoms as part of its diet.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
The Orangefin Labeo apparently spawns in shallow water during the wet season. Commercial hatcheries induce reproduction through hormone injections.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, the Orangefin Labeo is found in large rivers, lakes, and man-made reservoirs within its extensive distribution range, including regions of Pakistan, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and southern China.
