General Description

The Labeo Chrysophekadion, known as the Black Shark or Black Sharkminnow, exhibit unique characteristics such as a large dorsal fin, fringed lips, and a black body with an iridescent spot on each scale. Belonging to the Cyprinidae family, this species can reach up to 60.0cm in size. The species thrives in Southeast Asia, mainly in river channels, tributaries, and floodplains.

Aquarium Setup

For a successful aquarium setup for Labeo Chrysophekadion, a large tank with a minimum of 10000 litres is required. The setup should include a mature filter system, regular water changes, and well-oxygenated water with some movement. Providing caves or shaded areas is beneficial, especially for smaller individuals. Water conditions should maintain a temperature of 20-26°C, a pH range of 6.0-8.0, and a hardness of 36-268ppm.

Behaviour

The Black Shark species can display aggressive territorial behavior towards its own species and similar-looking fish, particularly in confined spaces. They tend to establish territories and defend them vigorously when needed.

Feeding and Diet

Labeo Chrysophekadion primarily feeds on aufwuchs grazers, consuming algae, small crustaceans, and insect larvae. Their diet should consist of live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia, along with high-quality dried flakes, granules, and fresh plant material. Additional options like shelled peas, cucumber, spinach, and fruits can be included for a balanced diet.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction in Labeo Chrysophekadion occurs seasonally, typically at the beginning of the wet season. Spawning takes place upstream, where the eggs settle on shallow sandbars and hatch as water levels rise. Mature females may exhibit deeper bodies and potentially grow larger than males.

Habitat and Distribution

These Black Sharks are widespread across Southeast Asia, including regions in Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia, such as Borneo, Sumatra, and Java. They are commonly found in river systems, tributaries, and floodplains, with adults migrating seasonally for foraging and breeding purposes. The species' type locality dates back to the Kalimas River in Java, Indonesia.

Etymology

The name "Labeo" is derived from Latin, signifying "one with lips," alluding to the distinctively thick and fleshy lips of this genus. The species epithet "Chrysophekadion" originates from Ancient Greek, combining "gold" and "lens-shaped spots," describing the golden-centered scales present on adult individuals.
