General Description

Labiobarbus siamensis is a species of fish classified under the order Cypriniformes within the family Cyprinidae. It can be identified by its unique features such as the number of scales in the lateral series, absence of a shoulder spot, presence of longitudinal stripes on the body, and distinctive coloration patterns on the fins. The species may exhibit variations in appearance across different populations, with some potentially representing distinct species.

Aquarium Setup

Aquarium setup for Labiobarbus siamensis should mimic its natural habitat, including a mix of rocky structures, plants, and open swimming areas. A substrate of fine gravel or sand is recommended, along with moderate to strong water flow. Ideal water parameters are slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.5-7.5), temperature range of 22-28°C, and soft to moderately hard water (5-12 dGH). Tankmates should be peaceful species that can tolerate similar water conditions (see table).

Behaviour

These fish are known to be social and active swimmers, generally peaceful towards tankmates. They may display schooling behavior, especially in larger groups. L. siamensis are bottom-dwellers, often foraging along the substrate for food. They may occasionally exhibit territorial behavior, especially during breeding periods.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, L. siamensis feed on a varied diet including phytoplankton, zooplankton, periphyton, and benthic algae. In an aquarium setting, they readily accept high-quality flake or pellet foods, along with live or frozen options such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter. A balanced diet rich in plant matter and protein is recommended for their overall health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the specific reproductive habits of L. siamensis is limited. Like many cyprinid species, they are likely egg scatterers that spawn in dense vegetation. Sexual dimorphism in this species is not prominently distinct, with males and females generally resembling each other in appearance.

Habitat and Distribution

Natively found in the Mekong River system across Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia, as well as in the Chao Phraya and Bang Pakong watersheds in central Thailand, Labiobarbus siamensis inhabits rivers, streams, and flooded areas, showing a preference for habitats with varying water flow patterns and vegetation cover.
