General Description

Luciosoma Bleekeri, also known as Luciosoma Harmandi Sauvage, is a species belonging to the Cyprinidae family. They are primarily found in the Mekong River in Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, as well as in the Chao Phraya and Mae Klong systems in Thailand. This species can grow up to 21.0cm in size and is often referred to by common names such as 'apollo shark' or 'shark minnow' in the aquarium trade.

Aquarium Setup

To best replicate their natural habitat, a tank size of at least 860 liters should be provided. The aquarium should mimic a flowing stream or river environment with a substrate of rocks, sand, fine gravel, and driftwood. Hardy aquatic plants like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias spp. can be included. Regular water changes of 30-50% volume are recommended, and a tight-fitting cover is essential due to their jumping tendencies.

Behaviour

Luciosoma Bleekeri are known to prefer flowing water but can adapt to swampland and inundated forest areas during the wet season. They migrate back to perennial waters from November to December. They are agile swimmers and may jump if startled, emphasizing the importance of a secure tank cover.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Luciosoma Bleekeri primarily feed on terrestrial insects captured at the water surface. They may also consume aquatic invertebrates and fish fry. When kept in captivity, they can be fed a varied diet consisting of live, frozen, and pellet foods to ensure optimal nutrition.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Sexually mature females of Luciosoma Bleekeri tend to have a deeper body profile compared to males. However, specific details about their reproductive behavior and breeding habits in captivity are not extensively documented.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to various river systems in Southeast Asia, including the Mekong River basin, Luciosoma Bleekeri inhabits regions with flowing water. They are commonly found in areas with a mix of swampland and forest during certain seasons and migrate back to main water bodies.
