General Description
Luciosoma Setigerum, commonly known as the Apollo Shark, is a species of fish in the Cyprinidae family. It is a riverine species with a preference for slowly-flowing lowland rivers, often found in habitats with substrates of leaf litter and submerged woody structures. This species has a maximum size of 22.0cm and requires a minimum tank size of 860 litres. Sexually mature females of Luciosoma Setigerum tend to be deeper-bodied than males.
Aquarium Setup
The Apollo Shark thrives in an aquarium environment that resembles a flowing stream or river, with a substrate of variably-sized, water-worn rocks, sand, and fine gravel. Decorate the tank with driftwood roots or branches and consider attaching hardy aquatic plants such as Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias spp. to the decor. While very fast flow is unnecessary, maintain a relatively high proportion of dissolved oxygen and moderate water movement in the tank. Regular water changes of 30-50% volume are recommended, and a tightly-fitting cover is essential as Luciosoma spp. are known to be skilled jumpers.
Behaviour
Luciosoma Setigerum is a species known for its active behavior and an affinity for open swimming spaces in the aquarium.
Feeding and Diet
The Apollo Shark primarily feeds on terrestrial insects captured at the water surface in its natural habitat. It may also consume aquatic invertebrates, fish fry, and similar food sources in an aquarium setting.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Specific details about the reproductive behavior and dimorphism of Luciosoma Setigerum are not provided in the available information.
Habitat and Distribution
This species has a wide distribution across Southeast Asia, including regions within Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra, and Java. Its habitat includes lowland rivers with slow-flowing water, leaf litter substrates, and submerged woody structures. The type locality of Luciosoma Setigerum is the Pêbak River in Java, Indonesia.
