General Description

The Giant Sword Minnow, scientifically known as Macrochirichthys Macrochirus, is a unique species unsuitable for most private aquaria. It is the sole member of its genus and possesses distinguishing features such as an upturned head, a compressed body with a sharp ventral keel, and elongated pectoral fins. This carnivorous fish starts by feeding on invertebrates in its juvenile stage and transitions to a primarily piscivorous diet as it matures. With an estimated maximum size of 80.0cm, this species requires specific care to thrive in captivity.

Habitat and Distribution

Preferring large lakes, main river channels, and major tributaries, the Giant Sword Minnow is a pelagic species that also ventures into flooded forests during the wet season. It has a widespread distribution across Southeast Asia, including regions in China, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and the Greater Sunda Islands. However, populations in certain areas like the Chao Phraya and Mae Klong rivers have significantly declined due to various anthropogenic factors such as pollution and overfishing.

Aquarium Setup

For housing the Giant Sword Minnow, a tank setup resembling a flowing stream or river is ideal. Utilizing a substrate of rocks, sand, gravel, and boulders, along with driftwood and branches, provides a suitable environment. The aquarium needs to have ample open swimming space while maintaining pristine water conditions with high oxygen levels and moderate water movement. It's crucial to regularly change 30-50% of the water volume weekly and ensure a tightly-fitting cover as this species is prone to jumping.

Behaviour

Best suited to solitary living or kept with similarly-sized non-aggressive fish, the Giant Sword Minnow can be part of a group if the aquarium is large enough. It is a peaceful species that may get dominated easily in competitive environments and can exhibit skittish behavior, especially in confined spaces. Acquiring a minimum of three specimens is recommended for group setups in a spacious tank.

Feeding and Diet

As an obligate carnivore, the Giant Sword Minnow's diet evolves from aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates during its juvenile stage to a predominantly piscivorous diet as it grows. Providing a varied diet rich in protein is essential for its health and well-being in captivity.
