General Description: Mekongina Erythrospila, a species belonging to the family Cyprinidae, is endemic to the middle and lower Mekong River system in Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Recognizable by its distinct characteristics, this fish prefers medium to large river channels with fast-flowing water and rocky environments. The species' adult size can reach up to 45.0cm, making it unsuitable for most private aquariums due to its size.

Aquarium Setup: To house Mekongina Erythrospila, a tank of at least 10,000 liters is required. The setup should include a large, mature filter system, regular maintenance with weekly water changes, and well-oxygenated water with some movement. Water conditions should be maintained at a hardness of 36-268ppm, a pH range of 6.0-8.0, and a temperature between 20-26°C.

Behaviour: Known for its belligerent behavior, this species can exhibit aggressive territorial tendencies towards similar-shaped fishes and conspecifics, particularly in confined spaces.

Feeding and Diet: Mekongina Erythrospila is a specialized grazer that feeds on periphyton, benthic algae, and other organisms attached to submerged surfaces. While primarily herbivorous, a balanced diet for this fish should include meaty foods like live or frozen chironomid larvae, Tubifex, Artemia, chopped prawn, and sinking dried products with a significant vegetable matter content like Spirulina.

Reproduction & Dimorphism: Breeding during the wet season, adults of M. Erythrospila spawn in upland rivers, with juveniles migrating downstream to the main Mekong channel to forage, and then returning upriver. Sexually mature females may exhibit deeper bodies and potentially grow larger than males.

Habitat and Distribution: The species' habitat includes upland rivers with deep pools, rapids, and surrounded by inundated riparian forests. Its distribution spans from Chiang Rai province, Thailand to Kratie province, Cambodia, and extends to various tributaries such as Sesan, Srepok, and Tonlé Sap. The fish faces threats from dam construction impacting its migratory patterns and the decline in stocks due to intensive fishing practices.
