General Description

Mircodevario kubotai, commonly known as the Kubotai Rasbora or Green Neon Rasbora, is a peaceful species belonging to the Cyprinidae family. It is distinguishable by its hyaline dorsal and anal fins, unique dorsal and anal fin ray counts, and longitudinal scale pattern. This species exhibits characteristics of miniaturization with sexually mature adults typically measuring less than 20mm in standard length.

Aquarium Setup

The Kubotai Rasbora looks best in a planted tank with a dark substrate to showcase its colors effectively. It thrives in setups mimicking flowing rivers or streams with a mix of rocks, gravel, driftwood, and aquatic plants like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias species. It is essential to maintain stable water conditions, as it inhabits well-oxygenated headwaters with slightly acidic to neutral pH levels and temperatures ranging from 20-27°C. Regular water changes of 30-50% are recommended to keep this species healthy (see table for specific water conditions).

Behaviour

This species is very peaceful but thrives when maintained alone or with similarly-sized species that share its habitat preferences. M. kubotai tends to school in groups of 20-50 individuals in the wild, making it advisable to keep them in groups of at least 8-10 in captivity for a more natural display. Males of the species intensify their colors when vying for female attention.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, the Kubotai Rasbora likely feeds on small invertebrates, algae, and zooplankton. In aquariums, they accept dried foods but should mainly be offered live and frozen foods like Daphnia and Artemia. Feeding a varied diet including small live and frozen fare will ensure their optimal health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Successful breeding of M. kubotai can occur in captivity with proper conditioning. They scatter their eggs among aquatic vegetation without parental care. Mature females are larger and deeper-bodied in comparison to the more compact and colorful males. Controlled breeding setups can yield more fry with better survival rates.

Habitat and Distribution

The Kubotai Rasbora is found in calm to moderately-flowing headwaters and minor tributaries with well-oxygenated water in Thailand and parts of Myanmar. It is known from provinces like Ranong and Phang Nga in Thailand and the Ataran River basin in southern Myanmar. Sympatric species found in its habitat include Badis, Tetraodon, and Schistura species.
