General Description

Mystacoleucus Ectypus is a species within the Cyprinidae family, characterized by its body depth measuring 34.5-38.7% of the standard length, specific scale counts, and absence or rudimentary presence of barbels. The distinguishing feature includes a triangular distal blotch at the dorsal fin tip and the lack of black markings on the fins or body scales. The species shares a common trait with other fish species regarding the orientation of the predorsal spine, which in Mystacoleucus spp. may be challenging to spot without close examination.

Aquarium Setup

The optimal aquarium setup for Mystacoleucus Ectypus should mimic its natural habitat, consisting of flowing lowland river channels and swiftly-flowing tributary streams. A substrate of rock and gravel is suitable for this species, providing ample space for swimming. The specific requirements for tank size, water parameters, and tank mates can be referred to in the setup table.

Behaviour

Mystacoleucus Ectypus displays typical behavior for a pelagic species, preferring to inhabit the mid and upper water columns of rivers. This fish is known to be relatively peaceful and can coexist with appropriately sized tank mates in a community setup. Care should be taken when handling the fish due to the entanglement risk posed by the procumbent predorsal spine.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Mystacoleucus Ectypus feeds on small invertebrates, algae, and other plant matter. When kept in an aquarium, they readily accept a varied diet comprising high-quality flake food, pellets, frozen, and live foods to ensure optimal health and coloration.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information regarding the specific reproduction habits and dimorphic characteristics of Mystacoleucus Ectypus is limited. However, like many cyprinids, this species likely exhibits egg-scattering behavior, with little sexual dimorphism observed in physical appearance.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to the Khorat Plateau in Laos and Thailand, Mystacoleucus Ectypus is primarily found in the middle Mekong basin. It is recorded in various water systems in northeastern Thailand, including the Mun and Songkhram watersheds, as well as several Mekong tributaries in Laos such as the Nam Mang and Nam Kou drainages. The species' type locality is specified as the Nam Mang downstream of Ban Thabok, Vientiane Province, Laos.
