General Description

Opsarius Bernatziki, occasionally known as the "blue hillstream trout," features 6-7 bluish vertical bars on each flank and a large blotch at the base of the caudal fin. This species belongs to the Cyprinidae family in the order Cypriniformes.

Aquarium Setup

For Opsarius Bernatziki, a tank of at least 270 litres is recommended. The ideal setup mimics a flowing stream with a substrate of rocks, sand, gravel, and boulders. Decorate with driftwood, roots, and branches, leaving ample swimming space. Hardy plants like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias spp. can be added. Regular water changes, good oxygenation, and clean water are crucial. Ensure a pH of 6.0-7.5, hardness of 36-215ppm, and a temperature of 18-26°C.

Behaviour

Opsarius Bernatziki is unsuitable for general community tanks as it requires specific environmental conditions. It is a fast swimmer and vigorous feeder, likely to intimidate slower or smaller species during meals. This species is gregarious but should be kept in groups of five or more to prevent bullying of subdominant individuals or aggression in solitary fish.

Feeding and Diet

Opsarius Bernatziki is primarily a surface-feeder, consuming aquatic and terrestrial insects in the wild. In captivity, offer high-quality dried foods supplemented with live or frozen fare like larvae, Artemia, earthworms, Drosophila fruit flies, and crickets. Gut-loading live food before feeding is recommended.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the reproduction of Opsarius Bernatziki is currently unreported. Adult females are larger and less brightly colored than males. Nuptial males display orange pigmentation on the lower body during breeding.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, Opsarius Bernatziki inhabits well-oxygenated, fast-flowing rivers with gravel, boulders, and bedrock substrates. They are found in river systems in Thailand and Myanmar, away from coastal drainages. The species' distribution extends across the Tennaserim Hills from Thailand's Ranong to Pattani provinces and Tanintharyi Division in Myanmar.
