General Description

The Drape Fin Barb, scientifically known as Oreichthys Crenuchoides, is a small cyprinid with distinguishing features such as absence of a dark marking in the anal fin, presence of 11-13 rows of pores on the ventral surface of the head, and significantly enlarged dorsal fins in males. The species is characterized by its shy nature and remarkable coloration, ideally kept in well-decorated aquarium setups.

Aquarium Setup

The Drape Fin Barb thrives in a well-decorated tank with aquatic vegetation, woody structures, and the addition of floating plants to diffuse light. A soft substrate is recommended due to the fish's miniscule sensory bristles. Water conditions should be maintained at a temperature of 23-28°C, pH of 6.0-7.5, and water hardness of 36-179ppm (see table).

Behaviour

This species is gregarious, forming a pecking order within groups. It showcases interesting sparring behavior among rival males. Best kept in groups of 8 or more, the tank must provide broken lines of sight to prevent bullying. The Drape Fin Barb may become subdominant if kept singly or in cramped conditions.

Feeding and Diet

The Drape Fin Barb accepts dried foods but thrives on small live and frozen fare like Daphnia and Artemia. A diet rich in diverse foods promotes vibrant coloration and encourages breeding conditions. It has a reputation as a shy feeder, requiring varied diet to ensure health and vitality.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

As an egg-scattering, continuous spawner, this species exhibits no parental care. Males grow slightly larger, display stronger coloration, and develop an extended dorsal fin. Sexually mature females have rounded abdomens during spawning. Controlled breeding setups with nylon spawning mops or broad-leaved vegetation yield optimal results.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to tributaries of the Brahmaputra River in West Bengal, India, the Drape Fin Barb is found in slow-moving habitats with muddy substrates. It has been located in various regions including the Jorai River and the Buxa Tiger Reserve in eastern India. The species' future taxonomy may include undescribed forms from Myanmar, India, Thailand, and the Mekong basin in Laos.
