General Description

The Pethia Didi, also known as Puntius didi, belongs to the Cyprinidae family and is a species of fish that is relatively rare in the aquarium trade. It was previously considered part of the Puntius conchonius 'group' but was later placed in the new genus Pethia. The adult males of this species are smaller, slimmer, and more colorful than the females, especially during the spawning period. Pethia Didi showcases a unique color pattern with distinct markings that set it apart from closely related species.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, a tank size of at least 60 liters is recommended. The species thrives in a heavily planted aquarium with a dark substrate. Floating plants and driftwood are appreciated as they help diffuse light and create a natural habitat. While filtration does not need to be overly strong, gentle water movement is beneficial. The water conditions should ideally maintain a hardness of 18-90ppm, a pH range of 6.5-9.0, and a temperature between 15-25°C.

Behaviour

Pethia Didi is known for its peaceful nature, making it an excellent addition to community aquariums. It thrives when kept with fish that share a similar habitat, such as cyprinids and loaches. When kept in mixed-sex groups of 8-10 individuals, the interaction between rival males can be captivating to observe, especially during competitions for female attention or hierarchical positions.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Pethia Didi forages on diatoms, algae, organic detritus, insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In captivity, they readily accept a diet of small live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia. A balanced diet of high-quality dried flakes and granules, with added plant or algal content, is also essential for their health and coloration.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Although successful aquarium spawning of Pethia Didi has not been extensively documented, recommendations for closely related species suggest egg-scattering free spawning behavior with no parental care. Adult males, being smaller, slimmer, and more colorful, become highly visible during spawning periods. Proper conditioning and setting up a separate breeding tank with appropriate substrate and water conditions are critical for facilitating successful breeding.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to the Ayeyarwady River drainage near Lake Indawgyi and Myitkyina in northern Myanmar, Pethia Didi appears to be endemic to this region. It inhabits streams with muddy and stony substrates, usually flowing swiftly through bamboo forests, providing ample shade. The species coexists with various other fish species such as Pethia thelys, Devario strigillifer, Rasbora daniconius, and more, in habitats with algae-encrusted rocks or leaf litter as substrates.
