Behaviour

The Lipstick Barb can be kept in a community set-up if tankmates are chosen carefully, as it may outcompete or nip the fins of slow-moving companions. However, it thrives alongside small, robust species like active cyprinids or nemacheilid loaches. Males are aggressive towards each other, often sparring during daylight hours, especially in small numbers or limited space. Having a larger group with more females than males is recommended, with a ratio of at least four females to each male suggested to minimize aggression.

Feeding and Diet

As a generalist omnivore, the Lipstick Barb feeds on various small invertebrates, algae, diatoms, and organic debris in its natural habitat. In captivity, it readily accepts small live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia, along with high-quality dried flakes and granules that contain plant or algal content to maintain optimal condition and coloration.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

The Lipstick Barb is an egg-scattering free spawner, exhibiting no parental care. To maximize breeding success, a separate breeding tank with mature water and suitable substrate is recommended. Males are more colorful than females, displaying red pigmentation around the mouth, with dominant individuals showcasing scarlet markings extending to the dorsal fin. During spawning, males darken to an inky-blue color, while females appear plumper and slightly larger when sexually mature.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to the upper Ayeyarwady River basin in northern Myanmar, the Lipstick Barb is found in small streams and tributaries near Myitkyina city and Lake Indawgyi. Its habitat comprises clear water with dense aquatic vegetation like Vallisneria, Elodea, and Spirogyra species, over a soft substrate mixed with decomposing matter. The region faces conservation challenges due to illegal logging, despite being part of a protected area designated as the Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary.

Aquarium Setup

To mimic the natural habitat, the Lipstick Barb thrives in a densely planted aquarium offering broken lines of sight to reduce aggression. Adding floating plants, driftwood roots, or branches to diffuse light is beneficial and enhances the tank's natural ambiance. Maintaining water parameters within a temperature range of 18-24°C, pH of 7.0-7.5, and hardness of 90-215ppm replicates its native conditions. A tank size of at least 80 liters is recommended, ensuring ample space for a group of 20 or more individuals.
