General Description

Pethia Nigripinnis, formerly classified under the Puntius genus, is a small cyprinid fish known for its deep black fins in adult males and a distinct coloration pattern. This species, reaching up to 4.5cm in size, is endemic to the southern Western Ghats mountains in India. Inhabiting cool, flowing hill streams, P. Nigripinnis prefers well-oxygenated waters with substrates of gravel, rocks, boulders, and leaf litter.

Aquarium Setup

To mimic its natural habitat, a tank for P. Nigripinnis should include a dark substrate, variably-sized rocks, and driftwood branches. Ideal plants such as Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias spp. can be added, along with a stable water condition within a temperature range of 16-21°C and a pH of 5.5-7.5. Regular water changes of 30-50% of the aquarium volume are recommended to maintain optimal conditions (see table).

Behaviour

Despite being relatively peaceful, P. Nigripinnis is not ideal for community tanks due to its preference for cooler temperatures. It tends to form a pecking order, requiring sufficient broken lines of sight for weaker individuals to seek respite. Males exhibit sparring behavior and enhanced coloration in the presence of conspecific rivals, necessitating a significant amount of space for territorial behavior.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, P. Nigripinnis feeds on diatoms, algae, organic detritus, insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In captivity, they readily accept small live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia, alongside quality dried flakes and granules. A varied diet ensures their best condition and coloration.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction in captivity is challenging but possible through controlled conditions. Males are slimmer and more colorful than females, with deep black dorsal, ventral, and anal fins, and a bright red caudal fin during the spawning season. They are egg-scattering free spawners, exhibiting no parental care.

Habitat and Distribution

Pethia Nigripinnis is found in the Kalindhi stream, a tributary of the Kabini River in Kerala state, India, and in the Moyar River system, Nilgiri Hills region, Tamil Nadu state. These fish dwell in clear, oxygen-rich waters in the hilly streams of the Western Ghats, showcasing a preference for habitats with rocky substrates and biofilm-covered surfaces.
