General Description:
The Ticto Barb, scientifically known as Pethia Tic, is a species of fish belonging to the family Cyprinidae, within the classification order Cypriniformes. Often confused in aquarium literature, this species is less colorful compared to its congener, P. padamya, with males lacking the reddish-orange pigmentation on their bodies. It was previously categorized under the Puntius conchonius 'group' of closely-related species but has since been reclassified under the new genus Pethia.

Aquarium Setup:
For an optimal aquarium setup tailored for the Ticto Barb, a tank size of at least 72 liters is recommended. The fish thrives in a heavily-planted environment with a dark substrate, floating plants, and driftwood to provide ample cover and simulate a natural habitat. Although not demanding, the Ticto Barb appreciates gentle water movement and does well in a hill stream-like setup. Water parameters should ideally maintain a temperature range of 16-25°C, pH between 6.0-7.5, and water hardness of 36-215ppm (see table).

Behaviour:
Displaying a notably peaceful demeanor, the Ticto Barb is an excellent resident for community aquariums. In mixed-sex groups of 8-10 specimens, they exhibit intriguing behaviors, especially during interactions between rival males competing for female attention or hierarchical positions. The inclusion of schooling fishes in the aquarium enhances a sense of security and contributes to a more natural aesthetic in the tank.

Feeding and Diet:
As for its diet, the Ticto Barb is an omnivorous feeder, foraging on worms, insects, small invertebrates, plant material, and organic detritus in its natural habitat. In captivity, maintaining its best condition and colors requires a diet rich in small live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia. Supplementing with high-quality dried flakes and granules, preferably with additional plant or algal content, ensures proper nutrition for these fish.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:
Regarding reproduction, the Ticto Barb is an egg-scattering free spawner without any parental care. When conditioned well, they spawn frequently, with the possibility of fry appearing without intervention in mature aquariums. To encourage successful breeding, a separate breeding tank dimly lit with suitable substrate or spawning materials should be provided. Adult males are distinguished by their slimmer profile and more vibrant colors compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution:
Native to the Indian subcontinent, the Ticto Barb can be found across Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Although there are potential occurrences in Myanmar and southern China, these reports require further confirmation. The species thrives in shallow streams, minor tributaries, and waters with mud or silt substrates, often coexisting with various fish species in diverse aquatic ecosystems.
