General Description

The Puntigrus Anchisporus, commonly known as the Tiger Barb, belongs to the Cyprinidae family. This species is often found in forest streams and tributaries in Borneo, displaying a distinct barred color pattern with a deep body and red accents on the fins. It can reach a maximum size of 6.0cm and thrives in aquarium setups that mimic its natural habitat.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, a minimum tank size of 72 litres is recommended. Water parameters should be maintained with a pH range of 5.5-7.0, hardness between 18-179ppm, and a temperature of 20-26°C. The aquarium should be well-decorated with floating vegetation, overhanging plants, and driftwood to provide hiding spots and enrichment for the Tiger Barb. (See table for more details)

Behaviour

Limited observations indicate that the Tiger Barb is peaceful in a spacious aquarium with suitable tankmates. They exhibit gregarious behavior, forming loose hierarchies within a group of at least 8-10 individuals. Male Tiger Barbs engage in continuous rivalry for female attention and hierarchy within the group.

Feeding and Diet

Primarily omnivorous, the Tiger Barb feeds on insect larvae, zooplankton, plant matter, and organic detritus. In captivity, offer a varied diet including live and frozen foods such as chironomid larvae, Daphnia, Artemia, and high-quality dried products to ensure their nutritional needs are met.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Details on the reproduction of Puntigrus Anchisporus in an aquarium setting are currently unrecorded. Adult males tend to be slightly smaller, slimmer, and boast a more vibrant color pattern compared to females, showcasing sexual dimorphism within the species.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to Borneo, the Tiger Barb is found in various rivers and watersheds in Kalimantan and Sarawak. Its natural habitat consists of forest streams with clear water, sandy to rocky substrates, and thick marginal vegetation. The Tiger Barb shares its habitat with other fish species like Rasbora, Pangio, and Gastromyzon.
