General Description

The Puntigrus Partipentazona, commonly known as the tiger barb, possesses a unique color pattern with dark blotches extending onto the body covering scale rows, sometimes with additional markings. Belonging to the family Cyprinidae in the order Cypriniformes, this species is usually around 4.0cm in size. The genus Puntigrus was designated to accommodate species previously known as the Puntius tetrazona group, distinguished by 4 black bars on a pale body and black pigmentation on the dorsal fin’s basal half.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal display and behavior, P. Partipentazona should be kept in a community tank of at least 72 liters with a minimum of 8-10 individuals. The tank should be well-decorated to enhance the fish's coloration, and the addition of floating vegetation and driftwood is appreciated. Water conditions should be maintained with a pH range of 5.0-7.0, hardness of 18-179ppm, and a temperature of 20-26°C (see table).

Behaviour

Known for its peaceful nature, this species thrives in a community aquarium but engages in male rivalry for female attention and hierarchy within the group. It forms loose hierarchies and requires a minimum group size to minimize conflicts and promote social behavior.

Feeding and Diet

Considered an omnivore, the tiger barb primarily feeds on insect larvae, zooplankton, and plant material. In captivity, they should be offered a varied diet including live and frozen foods like chironomid larvae, Daphnia, and Artemia, alongside high-quality dried products to ensure proper nutrition.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Details regarding the reproduction of P. Partipentazona in aquarium settings remain unrecorded. Sexual dimorphism is observable, with adult males being slightly smaller, slimmer, and displaying a more intense color pattern compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, tiger barbs are typically found in heavily vegetated areas of rivers, sluggish streams, and natural lakes where algae and phytoplankton abound. They are distributed across river basins in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Peninsular Malaysia, with the type locality being southeastern Siam (modern-day Trat Province, Thailand).
