General Description
Puntigrus pulcher, commonly known as the Beautiful Barb, is a small species of fish belonging to the Cyprinidae family. It is characterized by a unique color pattern with four black bars on a pale body, distinct black pigmentation on the dorsal fin, and black pelvic fins.
Aquarium Setup
The minimum tank size recommended for Puntigrus pulcher is 96 litres. Setting up the aquarium with well-decorated features such as floating vegetation, overhanging plants, and driftwood can enhance the coloration of the fish. Water parameters should be maintained within a temperature range of 20-26°C, a pH of 5.0-7.5, and a hardness of 18-179ppm (see table).
Behaviour
In aquarium settings, Puntigrus pulcher is observed to be peaceful when housed in a sufficiently large tank with suitable tankmates. This species is gregarious, forming loose hierarchies within a group. Male individuals engage in continual battles to establish dominance and gain female attention. It is recommended to keep a group of at least 8-10 specimens to minimize aggression within the group.
Feeding and Diet
This species is considered an omnivore, feeding on a variety of sources such as insect larvae, zooplankton, plant material, and organic detritus. In the aquarium, a diet consisting of small live and frozen foods like chironomid larvae, Daphnia, and Artemia, supplemented with quality dried products, is ideal for their nutritional needs.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction of Puntigrus pulcher has been successfully achieved in aquarium conditions. Adult males typically exhibit slightly smaller and slimmer bodies compared to females, along with a more intense color pattern. These traits help differentiate between the sexes.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the Indonesian portion of eastern Borneo, Puntigrus pulcher is commonly found in areas such as the Kayan River in North Kalimantan and the Mahakam River in East Kalimantan. Although the precise range is not well-documented, its habitat likely includes forest streams and tributaries with clear water and sandy to rocky substrates.
