Behaviour
The Tiger Barb is known for its aggressive behavior, particularly manifesting in fin-nipping when kept in insufficient numbers or limited space. It is not suitable for tanks with timid, slow-moving, or long-finned species. This fish forms loose hierarchies, where males compete for female attention and hierarchy within the group. To reduce aggression, it is recommended to keep a minimum of 8-10 individuals in a tank to distract them from bothering other tankmates and to enhance their natural display.
Aquarium Setup
For Tiger Barbs, a well-decorated tank with floating vegetation and driftwood is ideal. They exhibit better coloration in such an environment. The water conditions should include a pH range of 5.0-8.0, hardness of 18-357 ppm, and a temperature between 20-26°C (see table).
Feeding and Diet
Tiger Barbs are omnivores, primarily consuming aquatic invertebrates, along with some plant material and organic detritus in their natural habitat. In an aquarium, they should be fed small live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia, as well as high-quality dried flakes and granules with additional plant content.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
These fish are egg-scattering free spawners without any parental care. To encourage breeding, a separate aquarium with mature water and suitable spawning material is recommended. Adult males are smaller, slimmer, and display a more intense color pattern compared to females.
Habitat and Distribution
The Tiger Barb is believed to be endemic to central and southern Sumatra with feral populations in various countries. While the specific habitat is unconfirmed, related species prefer forest streams with clear water and sandy substrates in Borneo.
General Description
Puntigrus Tetrazona, commonly known as the Tiger Barb, is a popular species in the aquarium trade. It is available in various selectively-bred ornamental strains, with distinctive features such as four dark vertical bars on a pale body. This active and boisterous fish exhibits vibrant coloration, but caution is advised due to potential aggression issues.
