General Description

The Kamalika's Barb, scientifically known as Puntius kamalika, was initially referred to as P. amphibius before its description, presumed to be specific to western India. This species stands out from its congeners due to its unique characteristics, such as the scale arrangement and the absence of distinct markings on its body and fins. When compared to similar species in Sri Lanka and India, the Kamalika's Barb displays variations in head length, eye diameter, maxillary barbel length, vertebrae count, and body markings.

Aquarium Setup

For keeping the Kamalika's Barb in captivity, an aquarium of at least 160 litres is recommended. The habitat should mimic its natural environment with ample swimming space, plants for shelter, and subdued lighting. Water parameters should be maintained within the suitable range (see table below) to ensure the well-being of the fish. Additionally, providing a varied diet consisting of flakes, pellets, live, and frozen foods is essential for their health.

Behavior

This species, found commonly in rivers, streams, and marshlands, tends to exhibit peaceful behavior within a community tank. They are known to be active swimmers and may display playful interactions with tank mates. However, it is vital to avoid keeping them with aggressive or larger species that could outcompete or intimidate them.

Feeding and Diet

The Kamalika's Barb is an omnivorous species that feeds on a varied diet in the wild, including insects, algae, and small invertebrates. In captivity, they can be fed a diet comprising high-quality flakes, pellets, live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter. Offering a diverse diet ensures their nutritional needs are met and helps promote their vibrant colors.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Details on the specific reproductive behaviors of the Kamalika's Barb are limited. However, like other barb species, they are likely egg layers that scatter their eggs among plants. In terms of dimorphism, males may display brighter colors or distinguishing body markings, such as a reddish body stripe, especially during the breeding season.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to Sri Lanka, the Kamalika's Barb is predominantly found in the southwestern "wet zone" region of the island, including areas within the Kelani and Gin river basins. Their habitat includes diverse water bodies ranging from rivers to marshlands. The species' type locality is documented as the Kalu River at Walandure near Kuruwita, Sri Lanka, situated at an elevation of 120 meters.
