General Description

The Snakeskin Barb, scientifically known as Puntius rhombocellatus, is a vibrant orange freshwater fish that adds liveliness to aquariums, particularly when housed in groups of six or more. Unlike some other Barb species, these fish exhibit less aggressive behavior, making them well-suited for community tanks with similarly sized, short-fin fish. They typically reach a size of around 2 inches and are characterized by their striking orange/red coloration with deep green body markings, reminiscent of snakeskin patterns.

Aquarium Setup

The Snakeskin Barb thrives in soft, acidic water conditions, ideally with a pH range of 5.5 to 7.0 and a water hardness of 4-10 KH. Maintaining a tank temperature between 22.8 to 27.8 degrees Celsius is recommended. For optimal well-being, a minimum tank size of 100 litres is necessary to accommodate their schooling behavior (see table). These fish prefer well-filtered, well-oxygenated water with ample hiding spaces provided by plants and other decorations.

Behaviour

With a semi-aggressive temperament, Snakeskin Barbs are most active when in the company of their own kind. In aquarium settings, they tend to school together, darting amongst plant stalks, and often occupy the mid-level of the tank. They display an inquisitive nature and enjoy exploring their environment, making them an engaging species to observe.

Feeding and Diet

As omnivores, Snakeskin Barbs have a diverse diet that benefits from a variety of food sources. They thrive on a combination of flake, pellet, and small frozen foods such as mosquito larvae, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Providing a balanced diet ensures their nutritional needs are met and supports their overall health and vitality.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Successful breeding of Snakeskin Barbs requires meticulous attention to water quality, particularly in terms of softness and acidity, which can be achieved through peat filtration. Female Snakeskin Barbs are typically fuller-bodied compared to males, a common dimorphic characteristic in this species.

Habitat and Distribution

Native to the blackwaters of Borneo, Indonesia, Snakeskin Barbs are accustomed to habitats with soft, acidic water conditions. In the wild, they prefer densely planted areas with ample hiding spots. Their natural habitat influences their aquarium care requirements, emphasizing the need for water quality parameters that mirror their native environment.
