Behaviour:

Very peaceful, but not ideal for community tanks due to its small size and timid nature. Best kept alone or with other small species like Pethia gelius and freshwater shrimp. This schooling species thrives in groups of 8-10 specimens, reducing nervousness and enhancing natural behavior and color display during competition for mating.

Feeding and Diet:

Likely a micropredator in the wild, feeding on small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In captivity, they accept dried and live foods of suitable sizes. A diet of small live and frozen fare like Daphnia and Artemia alongside quality flakes and granules enhances coloration and promotes breeding condition.

Habitat and Distribution:

Found in freshwater ponds and lakes near urban areas in India, including localities in Chennai. Often observed alongside various fish species and freshwater shrimp, it faces habitat threats such as urbanization and pollution in its native waters.

Aquarium Setup:

Best suited for densely planted tanks with floating plants and driftwood to provide natural cover and diffuse light. Moderate filtration is sufficient as they prefer sluggish waters over fast currents. Tank stability is crucial to prevent susceptibility to water chemistry fluctuations.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:

Reproduction details are unrecorded. Mature females are rounder-bellied, slightly larger, and less colorful than males, displaying distinct sexual dimorphism.

General Description:

Puntius sharmai, a small fish distinguished by features like maxillary barbels, elongate body with scales, and a dark lateral stripe with a blotch. Part of the Cyprinidae family, it was reclassified within the Puntius genus.

Distribution:

Originally described in Mogappair, Tamil Nadu, India, it is currently limited to a few locations near Chennai.
