General Description

The Greenstripe Barb, scientifically referred to as Puntius Vittatus, is a species of fish from the Cyprinidae family. Its common name originates from its distinct lateral stripe pattern, with unique black and orange markings on its dorsal fin. This small-sized fish typically reaches a maximum length of about 4.5cm and is commonly found in lowland streams, minor tributaries, and rice paddies throughout India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The species is a peaceful community aquarium fish, best kept in mixed-sex groups of 8-10 individuals for a more natural display.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for the Greenstripe Barb, a minimum tank size of 90 liters is advisable. The species thrives in heavily planted tanks with a dark substrate and benefits from the addition of floating plants and driftwood for added security and a natural environment. Water parameters should be maintained within a temperature range of 18-26°C, a pH of 6.0-7.5, and a hardness of 36-215ppm (see table for details).

Behaviour

Known for its peaceful nature, the Greenstripe Barb is an ideal resident in a community tank. Males of the species may exhibit vibrant colors and engaging behaviors when vying for female attention or establishing hierarchy within the group. In the aquarium, they tend to coexist well with similarly sized, open water-dwelling cyprinids, loaches, and benthic cyprinids.

Feeding and Diet

As foraging omnivores by nature, Greenstripe Barbs feed on worms, insects, small invertebrates, plant materials, and organic detritus. In captivity, they readily accept a varied diet that includes live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia, along with high-quality dried flakes and granules enriched with plant or algal content.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Greenstripe Barbs in captivity can be achieved by providing suitable spawning conditions in a separate aquarium with dim lighting and fine mesh or plants for egg protection. Adult males exhibit slimmer profiles and brighter colors compared to females, with nuptial individuals developing tiny tubercules on their pectoral fins as a sign of reproductive readiness.

Habitat and Distribution

The Greenstripe Barb is distributed widely across India, with additional populations found in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Its natural habitat includes lowland streams, irrigation channels, and rice paddies with muddy or silty substrates. The species prefers varying water depths and flows, adapting to different environmental conditions throughout its range.
